MTI

3 July 2008

Mother Tongue Influence (MTI) is the common problem faced by the non-English speakers. People who have MTI find it very difficult to converse with native English speakers. MTI is the influence of mother tongue on your accent, especially when you speak English. For example, when a north Indian or a south Indian says the word ‘simple’ you might hear it as ‘simpal’ or ‘simbl’. To overcome MTI, one has to find out how a word is being pronounced by a native speaker. Once you start following the same style you will begin to get a hang of it.

Tips to speak fluent English:

*Start ‘thinking in English’. One of the most common mistakes that English learners make is, they think in their mother tongue. When they want to say something in English, they think in their mother tongue, translate it to English and then say it in English. The result is a very flawed English sentence. Never do this!

If you want to speak in English fluently you will have to learn to "think" in English. When you are constructing sentences in your mind before saying them, think in English and form them in English in your mind.

*Read English magazines, learn new words, find out the meaning and start using them in your daily conversations.

*Watch News in English to get clear and correct pronunciation of words.
