Palmtop Nuclear Fusion Device Invented
The nuclear reaction that powers the Sun has been reproduced in a pocket-sized device, scientists announced today.
Researchers have for years tried to harness nuclear fusion to power the world. But its cousin, nuclear fission — the breaking apart of atoms — is the only method so far commercially viable.
The latest invention is not in the same league as efforts to build complex commercial reactors. The new device creates a relatively small number of reactions, and requires more energy to operate than it produces.
But the configuration is so small and simple that its creators think it may inspire unforeseen applications.
“I certainly find it interesting that you can heat a cubic centimeter crystal in your hand, then plunge it in cold water and it will cause nuclear fusion,” Seth Putterman from the University of California Los Angeles told LiveScience.
Putterman’s lay description greatly oversimplifies how the compact apparatus works.
Specifically, Putterman and collaborators heat a pyroelectric crystal, lithium tantalate, from minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit to plus 45 in a matter of minutes. This generates an electrical charge — 100,000 volts — across the tiny crystal, which is housed in a chamber filled with deuterium gas, a heavy form of hydrogen.
The high voltage is focused onto a needle-thin tip, which strips electrons from nearby deuterium nuclei and then accelerates them at a solid target containing deuterium. When two deuterium nuclei collide together at high speed, they fuse to form helium.
The Sun also fuses atoms in nuclear reactions that create light and heat.
The byproduct of the newly discovered lab reaction is a particle called the neutron. The scientists detect about 1,000 neutrons per second. Because neutrons are so penetrating, Putterman said that a hand-held neutron source might one-day be used to do geologic surveys or to look into cargo containers for nuclear devices.
“Current neutron generators are extremely cumbersome,” Putterman said. “They are about as big as a dentist’s X-ray machine, so you can’t carry them into the field.”
Pyroelectric crystals could also provide a beam of ions for use as a microthruster in a miniature spacecraft. The research is described in the April 28 issue of the journal Nature.
The Business Value of Software
Software isn’t just a tool for experts, and understanding the business advantages of the right software solution isn’t just the purview of IT professionals. Software touches processes central to the business such as operations, customer acquisition and retention, supply and partner management, and product and service development. The overall orientation of the software strategy-either system-centric or people-centric-can determine the kind of competitive advantage and future flexibility the business will realize as a result of its investment.
Research shows that companies which invest in software as a strategic asset for their people perform better. It also stands to reason that business solutions engineered to meet customer needs and anticipate changes in the social, economic and political drivers of the world deliver more value to organizations than software developed by whim or committee. Microsoft believes software that enables people to discover information and patterns in that information; helps them make better information decisions; facilitates effective collaboration with colleagues, customers and partners; and promotes decisive actions based on well-informed insights is the key to meeting the challenges of the new world of work and overcoming its challenges. A People-Ready Business supports its people with strong values, ongoing education, and rationalized business practices, so its people-enabled with right technology and information-are empowered to transform those challenges into opportunities.
Microsoft Bus
Microsoft recently started bus service for employees at Bangalore. Employees can start work from the bus itself and their office hours counts from the time they start work in the bus. Same way total working hours of the day calculate based on at what time they stopped work in the bus. Traffic jam in Bangalore is quite normal and company do not want to waste the time of the employees in roads. The idea was proposed by an employee through their suggestion scheme and readily accepted by the Management.

Child Labour
Initiatives towards Elimination of Child Labour – Action Plan and Present Strategy:
The problem of child labour continues to pose a challenge before the nation. Government has been taking various pro-active measures to tackle this problem. However, considering the magnitude and extent of the problem and that it is essentially a socio-economic problem inextricably linked to poverty and illiteracy, it requires concerted efforts from all sections of the society to make a dent in the problem.
Way back in 1979, Government formed the first committee called Gurupadswamy Committee to study the issue of child labour and to suggest measures to tackle it. The Committee examined the problem in detail and made some far-reaching recommendations. It observed that as long as poverty continued, it would be difficult to totally eliminate child labour and hence, any attempt to abolish it through legal recourse would not be a practical proposition. The Committee felt that in the circumstances, the only alternative left was to ban child labour in hazardous areas and to regulate and ameliorate the conditions of work in other areas. It recommended that a multiple policy approach was required in dealing with the problems of working children.
Based on the recommendations of Gurupadaswamy Committee, the Child Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Act was enacted in 1986. The Act prohibits employment of children in certain specified hazardous occupations and processes and regulates the working conditions in others. The list of hazardous occupations and processes is progressively being expanded on the recommendation of Child Labour Technical Advisory Committee constituted under the Act.
In consonance with the above approach, a National Policy on Child Labour was formulated in 1987. The Policy seeks to adopt a gradual & sequential approach with a focus on rehabilitation of children working in hazardous occupations & processes in the first instance. The Action Plan outlined in the Policy for tackling this problem is as follows:
•Legislative Action Plan for strict enforcement of Child Labour Act and other labour laws to ensure that children are not employed in hazardous employments, and that the working conditions of children working in non-hazardous areas are regulated in accordance with the provisions of the Child Labour Act. It also entails further identification of additional occupations and processes, which are detrimental to the health and safety of the children.
•Focusing of General Developmental Programmes for Benefiting Child Labour - As poverty is the root cause of child labour, the action plan emphasizes the need to cover these children and their families also under various poverty alleviation and employment generation schemes of the Government.
•Project Based Plan of Action envisages starting of projects in areas of high concentration of child labour. Pursuant to this, in 1988, the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) Scheme was launched in 9 districts of high child labour endemicity in the country. The Scheme envisages running of special schools for child labour withdrawn from work. In the special schools, these children are provided formal/non-formal education along with vocational training, a stipend of Rs.100 per month, supplementary nutrition and regular health check ups so as to prepare them to join regular mainstream schools. Under the Scheme, funds are given to the District Collectors for running special schools for child labour. Most of these schools are run by the NGOs in the district.
Government has accordingly been taking proactive steps to tackle this problem through strict enforcement of legislative provisions along with simultaneous rehabilitative measures. State Governments, which are the appropriate implementing authorities, have been conducting regular inspections and raids to detect cases of violations. Since poverty is the root cause of this problem, and enforcement alone cannot help solve it, Government has been laying a lot of emphasis on the rehabilitation of these children and on improving the economic conditions of their families.
The coverage of the NCLP Scheme has increased from 12 districts in 1988 to 100 districts in the 9th Plan to 250 districts during the 10th Plan.
BPO, Brilliant Pool of Opportunities
Gone are those days when professionals like doctors, engineers, advocates, and chartered accountants were earning a bag full of money and were relishing the hall of fame. The good news for those from other streams is that, now BPOs are here to give you an opportunity to spread your wings of desire and sail in the air of opportunity to grab your fortune. For the very same reason, the BPO which stands for Business Process Outsourcing can otherwise be termed as Brilliant Pool of Opportunities in the above context.
Indian call centers may be a boon to many companies that have outsourced their customer support operations. These call centers seem to be riding high on the outsourcing wave, but for one key concern that continues to haunt them – Speaking Skills. The industry is not able to churn out fresh talent with high English Speaking Skills. The issue of bad communication and English speaking can be death knell to the Indian BPO sector. Grammar and accent neutrality are two key areas where the students fail. This is followed by general aptitude and ability to handle repetitive task. Many a time, a student does not even know why he is rejected by a call center. It is important to work on these issues, especially in colleges. It is heartening to know about the prospects for this industry while on the other, it is equally pathetic to see the quality of people who are expressing interest to be a part of this industry.
As matured individuals, we must never let this golden duck that lays golden eggs to slip from our hands. The right thing to do would be to equip ourselves with right skills and right attitudes. There are lots of institutions which offer professional services that make the students enhance their skill sets to meet the challenges posed by BPOs. Courses on language/communication and career planning tools like interview tips, resume writing lessons and counseling on BPO careers are offered by these institutions to keep the students abreast of the current trends of BPOs. Meticulous care has been taken in designing these training programs in such a way that it meets the demands of not only BPOs but also all allied careers.
Having said and done all about BPOs, now it’s your decision, whether to lag behind and be one among those mute spectators who never put their best foot forward in making a grand fortune or to equip yourselves with the needed skill sets and to march with those men or women who are in the stead of grabbing the wheel of fortune. The choice is always yours but the consequences are too expensive.
